Recovery fund Christian's Spinal Injury
On July 24th 2021 Christian and Caroline celebrated their magical love story by tying the knot in East Arnhem Land. Christian is known as the Male Midwife of Arnhem Land. Caroline is a wellspring of joy who returned to Australia from New York, to the VERY remote community of Numbulwar, to be with Christian!
Their journey as a married couple is only just beginning, and while driving the dirt track out of East Arnhem Land to their honeymoon, they had a serious single vehicle roll over in their troopie...
Miraculously, Caroline self extricated and got Christian conscious and out of the car, and was well enough to run many kilometers toward the remote town of Bulman to get help. Christian on the other hand, was in a bad way with a serious spinal injury. He was flown by Care Flight to Darwin, and then to Adelaide.
On July 29th Christian was blessed to be in the care of Dr Yau and his spinal trauma and neurosurgery team. He underwent emergency surgery to try and restore his crushed and displaced T12 and spinal cord compression.
July 30th was joyous! Christian walked a few steps! The previous day had brought horrible news that a lifelong spinal cord injury may be the prognosis. But no! That will not be the case. Christian is working hard to recover completely.
But this is only the very beginning. Every day has been a challenge for him and Caroline to press in and remain positive in the face of ongoing severe pain and an uncertain recover period.
Christian remains in hospital in Adelaide, his new wife by his side every day. This is far from their honeymoon, though it remains a time for them to connect, support and grow stronger together.
Please consider how you can reach out to these guys who just spent their savings on their wedding, lost their car, and now have months of uncertainty ahead.
They plan to use funds donated to help in the following ways
- Daily living expenses such as food, accomodation, toiletries, transport while away from home
- Ongoing care costs once back in remote NT, including Caroline being his main care provider and likely not being able to return to casual employment straight away
- Cost/difference to purchase another car after insurance is finalised
- Medical appointments and logistics for the months of healing ahead, including flights and travel from their remote location
-Equipment and aids to support Christian's home rehabilitation
Patient travel and motor accident compensation covers some part of the expenses (such as Christian's travel and medical care), however many daily expenses are not covered, especially for Caroline to journey along side Christian in his recovery now and moving forward in the beginning of their life as a married couple.
Thank you greatly for reading their story, send them your love, prayers and well wishes to keep them looking up.
