Recovery Fund for Tiffany, Midwife, Mama, Friend
A few weeks ago Tiffany suffered a bilateral pulmonary embolism, leaving her hospitalized for 5 days. Her mother describes it as the scariest moment of her life.
Complaining of chest pains and not being able to breathe, Tiffany was rushed to the hospital, only to be met with antagonism and waited to be seen for two hours, despite her passing out periodically from the pain.
With Tiffany being hospitalized due to her sudden illness, there is now a great need for her to recover both physically, emotionally, and financially.
Pulmonary embolisms are blood clots that form in the lungs. Clots blocked in our lungs can cause restricted airways and cardiac arrest. This fatal incident could have cost us another Black midwife and we all know that we need more midwives of color and Grand Rapids almost lost its only one.
Tiffany has worked in the El Paso and Grand Rapids community as a doula, lactation consultant, and as a midwife. She centers her work around informed consent, gentle midwifery and gives her all to educate, equip and grow her community. Aside from being a care provider to pregnant folks, Tiffany is also a single mother of five beautiful children.
We are extremely grateful that she is still here with us. Her doctors have told her that it would take her approximately 6 months to heal from the pulmonary embolism and it is necessary for her to center her rest instead of working. Currently, Tiffany (with help) is attending births and consults, considering the illness came suddenly and her clients prefer a Black midwife. We would like for her to rest, reset, and heal so she can come back stronger.
We are asking that you join us in fundraising for Tiffany and her family. We are looking to raise $10k to cover her living and current medical expenses through the end of the year. All funds raised go directly to Tiffany’s family and their current expenses at this time.
These funds would allow Tiffany to rest and recover in a way that might not otherwise be possible.
Tiffany has cared for many in her community and now it is our time to care for her. In the reproductive health community, we need Tiffany more than ever, but as a Black woman, we need her to rest and love upon herself and her children indiscriminately.
You can donate either directly through this gofundme, here or through her Cashapp ($plznthnx), Venmo (@tifftownsend430) or PayPal ([email redacted]).
Please give what you can and share this widely.
Thank you for supporting Tiffany and her family during this time.
Together we are stronger.
