Help us help Grandma Little Bit and Mr Robert!

Very little was mentioned in the news three weeks ago when Baton Rouge, Louisiana was faced with flooding that has been said to be worse than Katrina.  My children's fraternal grandmother, Elizabeth Robbins, lives in Baton Rouge with her husband Robert.  When Sydney first attempted to say "Elizabeth", she said "Little Bit" and it stuck!  So here is the story of Robert and Little Bit.

Both in their 70s, Robert and Elizabeth were finally beginning to relax and enjoy retirement.  Robert, a 21-year military veteran (major, US Air Force) finally retired after 20 years as data management consultant for the Louisiana Department of Education.  In addition to retirement, the two had just paid off their home ONE MONTH before the flood.

The story of the floodwaters rising and volunteer fisherman rescuing them from their home in boats is unbelievable.  But what is more heart wrenching is that Robert had been vigilantly paying flood insurance all the years that they owned the home and never knew that the contents were not covered by his plan.  Returning home for a quick view several days after the flood, Robert found 14 inches of water had entered and stood in the home.  Everything at that level was wet and ruined.  In addition, the refrigerator, dishwasher, freezer, washer and dryer were fried.

The last couple of weeks have been spent moving our debris, ripping up carpet, jackhammering tile and removing sheetrock that was wet and mildewed (see photos).  Robert does as much as he can and has been able to get contractors to help with the more strenuous work needed. Aunt Margaret drove down from Missouri with family to help last week.  The work is grueling and emotionally draining.

Unfortunately, amidst it all, Grandma Little Bit was taken to the emergency room as she had entered the initial stages of congestive heart failure.  She was stabilized and is doing better now.

Due to the area devastation all hotel rooms are occupied with flood victims and contractors.  Robert and Elizabeth have been staying with friends, but must look for an apartment outside of the city where they will live for the next several months.

The girls and I are trying to raise money to assist them in purchasing new appliances and help with living expenses while their home is under construction.  Even the smallest donation helps and will add up.  Many blessings to you all for reading this far and for your financial support.

Much Love, Heather & The Girls
