Background and Details
Miinjeni Women Organization is a non-governmental organization in rural Tanzania founded by Romana Sudi Puka Olomi in 2005. I am currently working here as a volunteer and I am really impressed by the passion and commitment of Romana and the whole community. It is incredible what this organization has already achieved in the past in a region that is beaten with a very high HIV and AIDS rate (appr. 50%) and which has to cope with poverty, malnutrition, poor economy, a lot of orphans and insufficient education.
We need 20,000 EUR to continue the construction of a Community Centre and for the basic health and nutritional training in the first month along with home visits to reach those most in need. After this we can maintain the Community Centre on our own with the fees for the children and the trainings. So far we have received land and built the foundation on it.
Miinjeni’s vision is to get a well-educated community without poverty and social discrimination through measures that strengthen women and enable communities to obtain knowledge and skills by the respecting of gender. Miinjeni’s working approach is highly characterized by massive grassroots mobilization and the empowerment of women. We believe that this will contribute to economic empowerment and social transformation for a sustainable development. The goal of building a Community Centre is to increase income and improve health and nutritional status in the areas of Shimbwe and its neighbors. Being a central point for communication in the community is also one of the objectives to enable people to strengthen their potential and thus develop the community and lead to a better life for all in the region.
Poverty is a general problem in Tanzania and Shimbwe’s inhabitants earn about 28 USD per month per family, which include 6-8 people. Shimbwe is a poor community because of bad infrastructure with steep hills and lack of transportation. In Tanzania 40 % of the children are stunted as a result of chronic under-nutrition, it is worse in the rural areas. The lack of childcare facilities reduces the income that women can earn or even leads to unemployment. In the Community Centre the children will be monitored cared for and get food twice a day plus snacks between the meals. Nutritional counseling leads to a sustainable improvement in the health status of the entire population and is an essential contribution to the quality of life and to the prevention of long-term effects of inadequate nutrition.
Besides the economic situation, the lack of knowledge about health and nutrition also leads to reduced development of the most vulnerable groups like small children. Parents have to get education and the Miinjeni Community Centre will provide seminars to improve parenting and nutrition. It will also be possible to organize seminars and meetings in the Miinjeni Community Centre’s facilities. The children will get adult supervision from an educated Montessori teacher together with three helpers. Big focus will be on hygiene and nutrition. Families will interact with each other and learn from each other. Because the mothers will meet while leaving their children or picking them up they will get in contact with other mothers and the Miinjeni Community Centre will have seminars for the families to get a greater understanding about the importance of proper food and good hygiene. This will result in more knowledge and social interaction.
Most children in Tanzania are expected to help with the household from early age and also take care of their younger siblings. By having children at the Miinjeni Community Centre the older children do not have to take care of their siblings, instead they can go to school when the parents are working.
By having a Miinjeni Community Centre the women can look for work in town and can also sell their home-farmed products at markets. That means that women can obtain an employment or receive an income from selling their products and the families will be able to increase their economy with about 80%.
If more women could get become employed more families could afford school fees and higher education. This means that more people will get specialized in different areas and local made products can be made and sold to families that now have an income.
In the end the community will be richer: both when it comes to economy and also knowledge and awareness.
