Reed’s SDR Surgery
Donation protected
Hi Everyone,
We’re fundraising for the first time for Reed’s upcoming Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy surgery, inpatient stay, and subsequent rehabilitation. Surgery is expected late January 2024.
For those that aren’t aware of Reed’s journey, he suffered a hypoxic ischemic injury at birth and now lives with spastic (tight muscles) triplegic (three limbs) cerebral palsy. Reed has made amazing strides in the last three years and is incredibly motivated to keep going. Reed’s spasticity in his legs, however, is limiting his progress. This surgery will help permanently reduce spasticity in his legs, help reduce pain long term, help keep his hips healthy, and make walking a bit easier for him in the long run.
This surgery is a rough one. It will be performed by a neurosurgeon and involve snipping abnormal nerve bundles that control the muscles in his legs. It’s going to require a 4-6 week inpatient stay and a subsequent 3 month intensive therapy program. Reed will have to re-learn how to crawl, stand, take steps, and balance with his own strength, not just his misfiring muscles.
Needless to say we’re going to need some help. This process is going to require both Steve and I to take large amounts of time off of work, unpaid. It’s also going to require numerous trips to the hospital, meals away from home, and new equipment for Reed. We are also taking a trip to Minnesota for a full gait evaluation and second opinion at the end of December.
Thank you for considering helping us! Every little bit helps! If you’re interested in giving something other than monetarily we are also open to help with our dog, meals, and help with Reed after discharge.
