Reforest, Restore and Heal Lahaina
Donation protected
Welcome to the Akua Seva GoFundMe campaign, where we're on a mission to renew the beautiful landscape above Lahaina, Maui. Our goal is twofold: reforesting the area with ulu, milo, and kukui trees to restore moisture, reduce fire risks, combat climate change, and rejuvenate the watershed. We also would like to introduce you to the multifaceted mission of Akua Seva.
Our Mission:
Akua Seva is more than a nonprofit; it's a movement dedicated to ecological restoration and community healing. We're passionate about transforming the land and the spirit of Lahaina and Maui's West Side. Through sustainable farming, educational initiatives, and creating a loving, thriving community, we aim to make a lasting impact on our environment and the lives of our community members.
Meet the Expert: George Purdy
We're collaborating with local dry farming expert George Purdy, who is bringing his wealth of knowledge to ensure the success of our reforestation project. George is not only an expert in dry farming but also a firefighter, adding invaluable insights into fire risk reduction. His expertise in compost, cover crops, regenerative farming, and Hawaiian farming is invaluable. We are also in discussions with other experts in compost, education, and marketing who will be joining our team.
How Your Support Helps:
Your generous contribution will make a tremendous impact on our mission. With $250,000, we can begin to:
1) Initiate Land Lease:
Begin the process of leasing 100 acres of land on the Lahaina hillside, the canvas upon which our ecological transformation will unfold.
2) Purchase Groasis Waterboxx Containers:
Acquire $80,000 - $100,000 worth of Groasis Waterboxx containers (7200 to be exact), innovative technology that kickstarts tree growth even in challenging environments, such as deserts. https://www.groasis.com/en
3) Land Survey & Groundwork:
Allocate funds for a comprehensive land survey and initial groundwork. This step is crucial to prepare the landscape with swales and ponds, maximizing water retention and ensuring the success of our trees.
4) Tree Starts & Support of Volunteers:
Secure 7200 tree starts of ulu, milo, and kukui. Then providing the necessary tools, food and water for our dedicated volunteer tree planters.
Our Target Timeline:
Our goal is to start planting early spring to early fall 2024. To achieve this, we have a detailed plan:
- Now: Secure a lease on 100 acres.
- November: Order Groasis Waterboxxes.
- December: Survey the property for swales and ponds.
- January: Begin initial groundwork.
- Spring to Fall 2024: Plant according to the Hawaiian Moon calendar.
The Impact of Your Contribution:
Your support not only helps reforest Lahaina but also has a profound impact:
- Reduced Carbon Emissions: Trees sequester carbon dioxide, contributing to a cleaner environment.
- Decreased Fire Risks: Reforestation reduces the risk of wildfires.
- Community Awareness and Building: Your support fosters community connections.
- More Beautiful Hills Above Lahaina: Together, we create a greener, more vibrant landscape.
