Every day, we rely on our ability to read without a second thought. But what if you couldn't read at all? For many refugees in Europe, this is the harsh reality. Limited literacy skills create immense challenges, hindering their integration, access to opportunities, and overall well-being. It's a daunting journey to learn a new language in a foreign land.

We're on a mission to create an inclusive digital resource that supports asylum seekers in Europe on their journey to develop essential literacy skills. By developing an app and educational materials, we'll make basic English literacy accessible to all, including the 7% who cannot read or write in their native language.

Who are we?

  • Marcus Farstad is a software engineer with a passion for languages. He speaks five and has over a year of teaching experience in refugee contexts. He created the prototype while volunteering at Nea Kavala Refugee Camp in 2021.
  • Eliza Winnert has a special interest in ESOL and has spent much of the past 7 years in Greece - teaching English, supporting volunteer teachers and creating relevant and inclusive material. She worked with Marcus on the pedagogic design of the prototype.
  • Hudai Karabulut is a creative strategist who leverages tools such as Photoshop to effectively convey ideas, information, and emotions in a simple and engaging manner. Based in Athens, Greece, Hudai has dedicated over six months to volunteering with One Happy Family.
  • Mohammad Rezaee is a computer engineer who spent more than two years in Greece as an interpreter for various organizations. He is pursuing his passion for programming with developer training in France.
  • Ella Mobbs is currently running an English programme for Habibi.works in Ioannina, Greece. She is interested in how to improve resources and teaching methods for adult literacy classes, and has been using the prototype to help her students.

By donating, you're supporting high-quality work that will transform the lives of refugees navigating the asylum process in Europe. Your donations will enable us to:
  • ensure that our digital resource remains freely accessible to those who need it most
  • fairly compensate our dedicated contributors
  • pay translators for their work
  • utilise digital tools to create materials
  • connect with NGOs and train their staff to use the app

Join us in paving the way to a brighter future through inclusive access to literacy.
