Regrow Together in the Harlem Rose Garden
Donation protected
Harlem Rose Garden founded by Carolyn Schaefer in 2003 is an NYC Parks GreenThumb Community Garden. It was started through the efforts of Harlem resident Carolyn Schaefer and with the support of neighbor Phil Gaetano. With Carolyn's passion for creating a beautiful space in the neighborhood and Phil's landscaping expertise, the garden has become a key fixture on 129th Street.
Each year, the garden opens for community gatherings, jazz concerts, holiday parties, events to give back to neighbors, and the daily calm of sitting amongst the trees and roses. The garden has been home to readings, youth financial literacy events, and writing workshops. It's an inclusive environment welcome to everyone.
On May 1, 2020, a wind storm blew over the two largest willow trees in the garden, breaking our birch, and flattening our rose beds.
With the tremendous work of neighbors, donations through our GoFundMe, and the support of community grants including NYC Green Relief and Recovery Fund, Partnerships for Parks Crowdfunding Challenge, and New York Restoration Project, we were able to replant our garden, create a memorial area to remember those we have lost, build a shade pergola in place of the fallen trees, and created socially distanced seating areas throughout the garden.
This though, is only the start of our regrowth. We exist as a garden in and of the community. To best serve our community, we wish to further elevate the voices within it. As we all begin to regrow after the experiences over the last year, we aim to continue to raise funds not only to ensure the stability of the garden but also create community programming that will feature local artists. We hope to be able to invite you to the garden not only to relax, but to experience the incredible spirit of Harlem.
Any funds raised will be spent entirely on the garden's upkeep and community programming.
Please help us as we try to lay the foundation for a sustainable and welcoming garden for decades to come. We cannot wait to reopen again to the entire community! Let's regrow together.
