Rescue 3 Sorraias of 200 Worldwide from Extinction

Anna and Sara here, united by our unwavering passion for horses and their well-being. We're reaching out to you with an urgent plea for your support in a cause that's incredibly close to our hearts.

In the picturesque region of Concelho de Odemira along Portugal's southwest coast, we're working together at Moita Nova Equestre with our 9 beloved horses. Recently, we encountered a significant challenge. During the devastating wildfires in Sao Teotonio , three precious Sorraia mares—the guardians of a lineage tracing back to ancient times—came into our care. These majestic beings, with only 200 left worldwide, were suffering from malnutrition and infestations.

Our mission goes beyond just rescuing these horses; it's about rewilding—an initiative to restore balance to nature's intricate tapestry and help prevent wildfires . Your support will directly fund crucial elements such as veterinary care, nourishment, fencing the land, and providing shelter. Allow us to shed light on how your contributions will be allocated:

• Veterinary Care: Ensuring the health and well-being of each Sorraia mare, addressing any medical needs during quarantine, foaling season, and general care.

• Quarantine Nourishment: Providing high-quality and speacialized food for the mares during their initial three-month quarantine period.

• Fencing the Land: Establishing secure boundaries for the 40-hectare property between Boavista dos Pinheiros and Sao Teotonio, the chosen site, to create a safe and natural environment for the Sorraia mares.

• Rotational Fencing: Setting up sectioned areas to allow for rotational grazing, ensuring the sustainability of the land.

• Shelter Construction: Building shelters for the mares to seek refuge during various weather conditions and especially during the foaling season.

• Transport for Reproduction: Covering the costs of transporting stallions for reproduction purposes, contributing to the preservation of the Sorraia lineage.

• Upkeep of Fencing: Supporting ongoing maintenance and repairs to the fencing lines, ensuring the security of the Sorraia mares.

• Transportation Expenses: Facilitating the transportation of mares from their original homes to quarantine and later to Misericordia de Boavista.

• Marketing for Foals: Allocating funds for marketing efforts to sell foals and promote the Sorraia breed.

• Educational Initiatives: Investing in conferences, educational programs, and visits to teach people about the Sorraia breed and the importance of rewilding.

• Rewilding project location will be at Misericordia de Boavista.

The 40-hectare property Misericordia de Boavista between Boavista dos Pinheiros and Sao Teotonio was acquired in 1997 by Josef Gövert, a passionate horse enthusiast who grew up with wild horses in Dülmen. His daughter Kathrin now manages the property.

Kathrin a friend , knowing of her untouched property and her shared family passion for horses, we identified her as an perfect partner in this vision.
