Working Together: Local Relief to South-West Haiti
On October 4th, 2016 the Grand'Anse (Jeremie) region of southwest Haiti was devastated by Hurricane Matthew, the most powerful Caribbean storm in the last decade. While the capital, Port au Prince, was largely unscathed, huge swathes of the Haiti's south have been levelled with some places reported as 90% destroyed, and over 1000 dead.
SURVIVAL KITS:
This page was created to raise funds for an initiative led by local Haitian businesses to provide survival kits filled with 25lbs worth of food, water, and provisions to distribute to Southern Haiti:
- Each Kit Costs about $15 to make
- One Kit can sustain a family of four for about ten days
- 10,000 kits have been succesfully delivered (to Les Cayes, Jeremie, Ile a Vache and Port Salut)
- Aim is to deliver an additional 30,000 in the coming weeks
[UPDATE] Torrential rainfall in the past 3 days has almost completely submerged parts of the South (Les Cayes), stranding those in desperate need!!!
Relief efforts are becoming increasingly difficult but that has not slowed production of the life saving kits. Hurricane Matthew may have passed, but the devastation it has left is more than evident.
Current Haitian infrastructure is unable to provide adequate disaster relief.
Haitians are reliant on international support both for emergency relief, and for assistance in reorganizing the country for the presidential and legislative elections postponed due to Hurricane Matthew.
The southern region of Haiti has experienced an almost total destruction of its crops, livestock and clean water supply
The South has now become largely isolated due to the collapse of bridges and roads connecting it to the mainland.
People have no food, no medical supplies, no clean water and no means of communication. There is now a very high danger of widespread starvation and cholera, and immediate relief is necessary to stop this humanitarian tragedy in its tracks.
This is a homegrown, Haitian operation spearheaded by local members of the business community, Maison Handal and the Coles Group, in cooperation with the Haitian government, the UN, and Haitian NGOs. Furthermore, all efforts are done in collaboration with the Haitian government's Direction de Protection Civile, which serves as a center for logistics and information so we know exactly where and to who each supply kit is going.
The NGO PRODEV will be the main recipient for all funds raised as it is one of the main receivers and distributors of our kits to the affected areas.
My family are working closely with PRODEV in these efforts and we have total confidence in the organization's legitimacy and transparency.
Furthermore, this is a joint operation so we will know exactly how and where the donated funds are used! To get the donations to PRODEV as quickly and effectively as possible, I will withdraw the donations into my own UK bank account and then immediately transfer the funds to a separate account provided to me by PRODEV. This way all donations will be at PRODEV's disposal as quickly as possible to be used for purchasing the provisions that make up our surivival kits and for organizing transport to deliver the kits to remote locations!

-Aquatab (water purification tablets)
-Rice
-Water
-Soap
-Salt
-Ramen
-Oil
-Clorox/bleach
-V8
