Remembering Allan Shockley

Donation protected
Allan Shockley is in an End of Life Care facility for people suffering from dementia and Alzheimers disease in Cottonwood, AZ. Neither he nor his wife, Rebecca, who have been through so much trauma and challenge over the past years as Allan's health has deteriorated are in a position to deal with the financial challenges they are facing at the end of his life. They need our help!

Allan Shockley is one of the grandfathers of the contemporary didgeridoo movement in North America and was on the ground floor of those who invented and developed American-made instruments out of agave flower stems harvested from his homelands in the North Sonoran Desert around Tuscon, Arizona. Since the early 1990's Allan's North Sonoran Dreamtime Pipes and Didgeridoos set a benchmark for instruments made in the USA. Through his beautiful and humble presence, profound knowledge of many earthly and esoteric teachings, excellent craftsmanship, patience and teaching skills he gathered a large community of didgeridoo players and enthusiasts around him, many making the pilgrimage from far and wide to come to Tucson, where Allan's home, compound and sweat lodge were always open and welcoming to those who needed a place to stay, find an instrument, play music, chant  or simply sit in meditation and prayer. In short Allan Shockley's place on E. Linden St in Tucson was a hub and a hive for the swarming Northern American didgeridoo scene, and so many more, over the years that ended the last millennium and the first years of this one.

Then, a few years ago suddenly, cruelly and devastatingly everything changed.  Allan and his wife Rebecca, who had relocated from the Bay Area to be life partners with Allan, were evicted without notice from the home he’d lived in for decades and which Allan's mother had left to him. They lost almost everything. Their world collapsed and, with Allan's health deteriorating they have struggled to maintain their lives and dignity in the downward spiral that ensued on so many levels. This is not a good story.

Allan has had a challenging life since birth. He managed, through community and prayer and his own drive for good,  to change his story to become a great and hugely positive advocate for community, and poured his life energy and love into making magic for almost everybody who came into contact with him. Respect for his own indigenous roots (he is part Choctaw) and those in Australia whose native instrument also profoundly inspired him and gave meaning to his own life.

In these extraordinarily challenging final weeks of Allan's life he and Rebecca need the help of the wider Community and of those whose lives he inspired, to deal with the very real financial pressures they are facing and with which they can ill afford to cope. Perhaps Allan and his extraordinary life and work may have inspired and touched you, even if you didn't even know he was there. Thank you. All donations are vital and hugely appreciated!
