In Memory of Chere: Memorial Scholarship Fund

On the morning of Thursday March 28, beloved member of our community, Belachew “Chere” Mengistu, passed away after a year and a half long battle with cancer.

Chere was a remarkable pillar in our community, since he immigrated to Canada over 22 years ago. He has since dedicated his life to supporting his family, his community, and his church. He was a man who led with patience, generosity, and humour. He was passionate about education, particularly mathematics and even in his final days could not put down his math textbooks. He was a deeply devoted and beloved husband and father of 4. Needless to say he will be missed dearly.

Arranging a funeral for a beloved husband and father is no easy task and the days and months ahead will be a challenge as his family navigates life without him. We, the friends of the Mengistu family, want to give Chere the dignified farewell he deserves.

As someone who was so passionate about and dedicated his life to education (he completed a Masters in Education majoring in mathematics), the family has requested that any funds raised go towards a scholarship they hope to start for Ethio youth in his name to further their education. We know that this would be the legacy that Chere would want, and we hope this is how he is remembered by all.

We are reaching out to our community, friends, and anyone who has been touched by Chere’s kindness and generosity. Your contributions will go directly towards a scholarship fund in his name.

Whether you can contribute financially or simply share this campaign, your support will make a difference and will be greatly appreciated.

We are so grateful for your generosity, love, and support during this difficult time. Your kindness reminds us that we are not alone in our grief and that our community stands with us as we mourn the loss of Chere.

With love and gratitude,
Friends of the Mengistu’s
