Zar has been a staple in the Minnesota Baseball community for a long time. He was a high-level baseball player and later returned as a high-level umpire. Everyone who has ever played or been on the field while he umpired has been positively impacted just by knowing him.
Zar has been a staple in the Minnesota Baseball community for a long time. He was a high-level baseball player and later returned as a high-level umpire. Everyone who has ever played or been on the field while he umpired has been positively impacted just by knowing him.
Zar spent a lot of time unofficially mentoring and helping umpires whether it was learning 3-man mechanics, talking situational umpiring or using rulebook language to diffuse situations. He always wanted to share whatever he knew to make everyone better.
You may or may not know that Zar umpired with multiple knee braces for many years. It may have been a couple of years since you saw him on the diamond. Zar missed being on the diamond greatly. He needed some surgeries that did not go well and he was no longer able to umpire.
It is with a heavy heart that I am letting you all know that Zar did not survive the Hospital Treatment Protocol for Covid-19. He battled the illness since Oct. 13th and only recently passed away.
Unfortunately, in the modern medical system this will result in some high medical bills that will be passed on to his family. Zar is survived by his wife Rebekah and their children Yevi, Alex, Aaron and Savannah.
I am starting a GoFundMe for my fellow umpire brethren and anyone else in the Baseball or Softball community that wants to help the Kovalov family in this time of need.
I want to express my gratitude from the bottom of my heart for helping one of your fellow umpires’ families in this time of need.
