Remembering Ly Eng Ros's Generous Spirit

Donation protected
Our beautiful protector…

Ly Eng Ros grew up tending to the rice fields, where farming has been the foundation of her family’s livelihood for generations. The rice they grew is not only a means of survival but a way of giving back—some of it is shared with neighbors in need or donated to those less fortunate. The rest is either kept for their nourishment or sold, providing a modest income. Her connection to the land and the rhythm of the seasons reflects a deep sense of responsibility and generosity. However, her life then shifted.

She and her husband, Sorn Ros are survivors of the Cambodian genocide. Navigating through the jungles with two children and a baby in her womb, the couple found sanctuary in Thailand. After recovering from the genocide, the couple created a new life in Oakland, California, and continued to care for what went from three children to seven.

On Monday, October 28th, she was admitted to the hospital in critical condition. She went under surgery however, our family soon discovered that our time with her became limited. She took her last breath on Tuesday, November 19th.

Her husband described her as a woman of deep love and passion for her family, especially her children and grandchildren, whom she adores. Her pride in them is reflected in the framed photos of her grandchildren that decorated her walls, a constant reminder of the joy they bring her. She also has a profound appreciation for nature, finding joy in her garden where flowers bloom into vibrant colors, much like the richness of her culture. Her heritage holds great significance to her, encompassing the traditions, clothing, religion, and, most notably, the dances that connect her to her roots. A regular visitor to the temples, she cherishes these moments as a way to honor her spirituality. She expressed love through the act of cooking delicious meals. In her free time, she found happiness in spending time with her family and friends, enjoying the comfort of familiar faces and the warmth of those she held dear.

We ask our community members to contribute what they can. Our family would love to ensure that our protector transitions with grace. We all appreciate you all.

With love and light,

The Ros, Sou, and Meng family
