The family, friends, students, and alumni of the University of Maryland, College Park mourn the unexpected death of Aaron “Rin” McGrew. He was a beloved father, son, mentor, and advocate in the Black community. Rin worked at Nyumburu Cultural Center (University of Maryland, College Park) as the Technical Coordinator. In doing this, Rin gained many friends and mentees. He taught many students how to use technical sound equipment, gave lessons on audio & sound engineering, and a host of other skills/tutorials that has led to their success today. He was constantly involved in programs like Black Male Initiative (BMI), that is dedicated to the involvement and excellence of Black men on campus. He was an active voice for the Black community. Our brother was an extremely hard worker, activist, and his love and dedication to Nyumburu Cultural Center were definitely felt by anyone that even walked in the building!

He was involved in various endeavors such as a member of MALIK Fraternity, Incorporated, CEO and Owner of TEFLON Security Services, and fitness inspiration. Through his company, TEFLON Security Services, he served as a bodyguard and security detail for various celebrities and public figures like Mayor Muriel Bowser, CeeLo Green, Dave Chappelle, and Brandy; just to name a few. His confidence, passion, and eagerness to work were very admirable and definitely motivated students to be more active in the Black community. He contributed to helping those in need, including his a strong advocate for a fair and just prison system. His activism will continue to live on in us as we fight to fulfill his legacy.

Rin left great impressions on a lot of people on and off-campus. His genuine passion for teaching Black students the value of getting involved and fearlessly showcasing their talents inspired more than a decade's worth of students to reach heights they may never have known was possible.

Now, we share a responsibility to support his family in their time of need in the same way Rin showed empathy and support for everyone he came in contact with. As Rin said, “His DNA is all over Nyumburu”, as a community of Alumni, friends, and mentees let’s take this time to reflect and provide as much help as possible in the name of love, respect, and gratitude. Let's do this for Rin yall! Any donation big or small is very much appreciated, ALL proceeds will be going his family to help provide financial relief. In addition to your donations, if your would please share some messages or stories in the comments that would be very appreciated.
