Remembering Urban Sjoberg

If you knew my dad you knew that he was well loved by everyone around him. It was hard to come up with a reason not to like him. But on the morning of Friday, November 6, 2020, my life changed forever.

I received a phone call Friday morning from a Kaiser in Redwood City explaining that my dad went in to the ER at 5am on the previous night for chest pain and shortness of breath. They took a scan of his chest to reveal an acute aortic dissection, which is damage to the inner layers of the artery that pumps blood to your brain and to the rest of the body. His artery was damaged so his heart couldn't supply his body with blood. He then was transferred to a different hospital in Santa Clara to undergo emergency cardiac surgery to put in a repair bypass in attempt to save him. Despite Urban testing positive for COVID-19, they continued with the procedure, and after a 6.5hr surgery, it was successful. But, 30 minutes later, he endured a seizure. Hours of rest later, at 9pm, when his vitals seemed normal, they went to remove the breathing tubes and tried waking him up, but he never woke up. So they took a CT scan of his brain to reveal devastating global brain injury and they saw massive brain death.

This news was so sudden and such a shock to everybody that knew and loved my father. Because all of our family live in Sweden, I was the only person he put down as an emergency contact. Therefore, I am responsible for all the funeral arrangements, planning services, and managing finances. It was hard enough learning about the death of my dad, but I now have a financial weight on my shoulders that I, as a 20 year old college student, cannot take care of on my own. I have never experienced a close death in my family yet, so this is super hard for me as I've never done this before. I will need as much help as I can get.

As of right now, I am waiting on the autopsy results from the coroner. I am leaning towards having a viewing and funeral service for our friends in the Bay Area in a few weeks, following with a cremation service so I can fly him to Sweden with me, which will be his final resting place. Once in Sweden, I intend on having one more memorial service for our family and friends there too, roughly in about a month's time. Everything is up in the air still, as I am still in the process of planning everything; nothing is set in stone yet. Therefore I'm not really sure the total funds I will need, I just know that I will need a lot of help. I will be in charge of the final expenses, so if you have any advice or are in the position to help, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I will need all the help I can get. Thank you to everyone in advance, I will keep you all updated as soon as I learn new things.
