Renovate Foxy Island, new trees, flowerbeds and other items
Donation protected
The area colloquially known as Foxy Island is an open stretch of uncultivated and unused land sitting between Farringdon, Doxford Park, Silksworth and Gilley Law. In 1998, the council designated it as a site for a potential country park but no plans were ever undertaken. In 2021, authorities proposed to build a crematorium on the site, but this was rejected by residents.
The site is a sprawling natural wilderness but suffers from sporadic litter, neglect and anti-social behaviour. As developments creep up around it, there are fears the site could be eventually carved up for housing anyway. Because of this, we are proposing a fundraising campaign to transform the site on a long term basis.
With your help, we aim to work with local community groups and organisations such as The Foundation of Earth to do the following:
- Plant new trees with the goal of creating new forest space
- Create new flowerbeds near the peripheral paths and the stream
- Help clean and tidy it up
- Invest in other potential decorations, such as pebbled paths.
Foxy Island has the potential to be one of the most beautiful natural and public spaces in Sunderland and we should not waste this opportunity.
SGM plans to back this campaign over a long term basis. The money raised on this project will be distributed to selected community groups and will not be received or handled by SGM.
