John Rosamond Johnson

Outstanding Stanton Legacies

"Lift Every Voice and Sing" was first written as a poem created by James Weldon Johnson, it was performed for the first time by 500 school children in celebration of President Lincoln's Birthday on February 12, 1900, in Jacksonville, FL. On this day, Stanton School was expecting a special visitor: Booker T. Washington. Dr. Washington came to Jacksonville, FL ( Tuskegee Institute Founder), to commemorate Abraham Lincoln’s birthday with Johnson, according to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Johnson taught “Lift Every Voice and Sing” to 500 students so they could recite it as an introduction for Booker T. Washington.

The poem "Lift Every Voice and Sing" was set to music by Johnson's brother, John Rosamond Johnson, and soon adopted by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) as its official song. Today “Lift Every Voice and Sing” is one of the most cherished songs of the African American Civil Rights Movement and is often referred to as the Black National Anthem.

Today and Future
There are years of neglect that will need to be evaluated and corrected. Right now the building is condemned and we believe it will take minimally $10 million to complete our renovations so this is one of many fundraisers.  To see our vision view www.historicstanton.org/3d-virtual-walkthrough.html

No amount is too small or great. Thank you in advance for your contribution with your help we will succeed in restoring this building and preserving the history for future generations.
