Renovate the Media Centre at Orange Grove School

hi I am gary meyers and want to renovate the media centre / library at the school where Kerry Lee helps out .Its a great cause and I will start the ball rolling with a. $500 Aus dollar contribution , it. staggers me how wonderful these volunteers and people are Kez Design studio will manage the alteration .

You, together with your “funders”, are certainly having a hand in improving the present deplorable level of literacy in this beautiful country! I thought it might be helpful if I gave you a bit of background re our precious library. Maybe you can use some of it on your Go Fund Me page. When I retired in 2003 as Librarian of a High School, I was asked by a friend if I would like to volunteer at an outreach programme called the " Granny Project" whereby retired women came in to schools to lend extra support to struggling pupils. I was assigned to OGPS but when the headmistress heard I was a librarian she took me to a room strewn with books , the majority in differing stages of disrepair. The govt had withdrawn funding for a librarian many years before and thus was the status. She begged me to try and restore it to its former glory and thus the library was resurrected. This was 20 years ago and there is still very little govt support for libraries, never mind an actual librarian post! We started with 2 volunteers but today we are a group of 13 passionate and dedicated women. The school has a complement of 1600 pupils, mainly from disadvantaged backgrounds, ranging from Grade R to Grade 7 and we rely solely on donations from members of the public to keep our bookshelves stocked and the library functioning. For many of the children English is not their first language and school is their only contact with books, thus we try, with our limited resources, to expose them as much as possible to the incredible gift of reading and the value of books.
