Renters Reform: Help with legal fees, please
Donation protected
Hello everyone,
There is never a good time to ask, but we urgently need your help to raise funds to cover legal costs following our eviction from a private rented flat earlier this year.
This is a link to a 1 minute sample of a recording of two council officers discussing my case in Januray 2023
I made an official complaint immediately.
H&F council have just concluded their investigation and found "no evidence" to support my claim against either officer.
If you have listened to the full recording you will know that this is not possible. The evidence has been deliberately ignored.
This is why we need to get this into court.
Here is an outline of the events:
In April 2022 Hammersmith and Fulham Council inspected our flat that had flooded in July 2021 due to an extreme weather event in England.
They had refused to visit before as we were required to give the landlord "reasonable time" to do the repairs.
10 months later they inspected and saw it was "toxic" and "unfit for human habitation". Our tenancy was due to expire in June 2022 and the council stalled and stonewalled us, but we fought on.
We stood on the law and forced the landlord to issue us a new tenancy in June 2022 and continued to ask for the repairs to be done immediately.
We were issued a Section 21 notice in September 2022 and successfully contested it and continued to ask for the repairs.
The landlord and council both to this day continue to claim that we were obstructing the works despite the fact that we have evidence to show we granted access every time it was requested, the evidence was ignored and not included in any report or decision.
In November 2022 we were issued a Section 8 notice by our landlord and we insisted that it be taken to court. The court date was set for March 2023.
January 2023 H&F Council issued a Prohibition Order on our flat making it illegal for us to continue to stand our ground and effectively made us homeless. We complied and are staying with family still. No agent or landlord will give us a tenancy now.
On 16th March 2023 the Court found in favour of the landlord and issued a possession order terminating our tenancy as he claimed to the court he wished to "reside in the property" and this request for posession was unrelated to the previous dispute.
It's a long and complicated case but that is why we need professional help to reach a just outcome and move on from this.
We have a solicitor who could take on our case but the costs are in the hundreds of pounds per hour and it could be a long trial. We can't afford not to follow through with this as our case is so strong and the judgement needs to be made in our favour for ALL RENTERS.
Please, if you can donate a few pounds it could make the world of difference for us and help us set a precedent, a landmark case where Landlords and Local Authorities are forced in the future to treat tenants with the dignity and respect we all deserve.
Thank you,
