Redevelop and Reopen the Shetland Tourist Office!

On the 18th of November 2024, Visit Scotland closed the Shetland iCentre, the only tourist office in Shetland, as part of their strategy to switch to a purely digital format of tourist information. This was despite a massive public outcry, including a petition by the Shetland Tourism Association that raised over 4000 signatures. The Shetland Islands Council immediately put the building for sale or lease, showing no interest in retaining it as the crucial social and information hub it was, the very heart of tourism in Shetland torn out overnight.
But with your help, we can restore it! Two Shetland women, Netta Simpson and Elaine Nicolson, have purchased the building, and are working with the Shetland Tourism Association to restore the property and reopen it as the Shetland Tourist Office. The building currently stands empty, furniture carried away and shelves stripped from the walls. We need to, through financial funding and physical donation, accomplish the following:
- Furnish the lower floor as a tourist information centre and shop, with a till, shelves for local produce, and more!
- Furnish the upper floor as offices, a conference room, and event space for rental!
- Fund the initial operational costs of the building, including water, electricity, etc.
- Allow the STA to dedicate time and resources to the development of the Tourist Office.
- Advertise the reopening of the office across Shetland and beyond, working with local and national tourism industry agents to secure the best resources provided in Shetland.
Every penny donated to this fundraiser will go directly to the redevelopment and reopening of the tourist office - the STA intends to develop the location into a self-sustaining tourist information cntre that can secure the future of the Shetland tourism industry for many years to come.
