Repair the Winthrop School House built in 1912

Donation protected

We have set up this GOFUNDME account for an easy way for people near and far to donate in the repair of the roof and other needs to help save our old school house.

The old Winthrop school house is a colonial historical building built in 1912 and has generations of family members pass through the hallways. Maybe you, your child, parents, or other relatives, over the past century, attended school in this wonderful old building. If so, you can understand how important it is to maintain this timeless landmark that anchors our small community.
Unfortunately, the school is not insured. It has been treated for termites and suffered a great deal of damage. Recently, a hailstorm broke out many windows and destroyed the roof, causing significant water damage, which will require immediate attention. Approximately twenty-five members of the community responded to the flyers that were placed around town, including the Crossroads, and met to discuss the issues and to come up with reasonable solutions to save the school so that it doesn’t end up in a heap of rubble like the gymnasium sadly did.
The group solicited five bids for repairing the building. The bids ranged from $32,664.51 to $52,000.00 for restoration. A fifth bid was for a temporary fix and came in at $26,500.00. We need to raise approximately $30,000.00 or more. It is a great deal of money but an achievable goal. Currently, our only option is to reach out to the community and former alumni, as a last attempt to raise money through donations and fundraising efforts. In the past when our community has suffered a crisis, everyone has come together in a big way to organize, donate time, resources, and overcome obstacles.

Please help spread the word by reaching out to those near and far who would like to help preserve a part of our community and our personal history, by restoring this historical landmark. Your participation, ideas, time and contributions will not only be put to good use but also will help preserve the staple of this community for generations past, present and future.

Please feel free to share this email.

(In the event that we do not reach our goal to repair the roof we will use the funds to preserve the museum items and the cafeteria (community building) on the premises. )
