Repatriation & Burial Costs Fund for Jon Tennant
Donation protected
Dr. Jonathan P. Tennant (Jon) tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia, on April 9th, 2020. He was not yet 32 years old.
Jon completed his PhD in Paleontology in 2017 at Imperial College London, where he was awarded the Janet Watson award for research excellence. At the time of his passing, he was an independent researcher at Institute for Globally Distributed Open Research and Education (IGDORE) and a member of the Global Young Academy.
Jon was an enthusiastic, dedicated and uncompromising proponent of open science. He was the founder of Paleorxiv and Open Science MOOC. He was a frequently invited keynote speaker to open science conferences around the world and he established close and lasting collaborations with researchers and students wherever he went.
Jon worked hard and passionately. He genuinely cared for others, professionally as well as in private, and he wasn't afraid to speak from his heart about things that mattered to him. To learn more about Jon and his work, please visit his website.
Losing Jon is an enormous loss to the open science community, but more importantly is it a tremendous loss to his family and close friends.
The purpose of this campaign is to ease the family's burden related to bringing Jon back home to Leicester, UK, from Indonesia. Jon did not have an insurance why the full burden of the expenses are landing on the family's shoulders. As of April 12, the estimated cost for the repatriation alone is £5000, and an additional £3000-4500 for the burial. The family is still awaiting more exact figures from the funeral director and we worry that the current figure for the repatriation may be on the low side. We have therefore decided to set the full estimated costs, as provided by the funeral director, as the goal for this campaign: £9500.
The family is preparing to set up a charity to honour Jon's memory. Any superfluous funds will be transferred to this charity.
Anything you may be able to contribute to Jon's repatriation and burial would be immeasurably appreciated even if it is just a few pounds. We would also be so very grateful if you shared the link to this campaign as widely as possible.
