Replace Accessibility Van Engulfed in Flames
Donation protected
The Harpeth Valley Community is raising funds to assist the Harris Family in replacing their wheelchair accessibility van that engulfed in flames last week during a school event. While the passenger and driver were safe, their vehicle (which is crucial to their daily lives) was completely destroyed.
Joshua Harris was left paralyzed with no hand function after a dump truck accident seven years ago and requires a wheelchair full-time. Last week, he was excited to watch his first grader participate in Hound Dog Run. Before they parked the vehicle in the parking lot, the driver/nurse noticed the van smoking. The motor caught fire with Joshua inside. Fortunately, he could get to safety. However, he could only wait a few feet away from his burning vehicle until the firefighters put out the flames.
This van is vital to the Harris family's quality of life, in addition to transportation to his many doctor appointments. He described his main joy in life as "attending my children’s sporting events, going to dinner, being able to get out of the house with them, and being a supportive Father even though I'm in a wheelchair."
Vans with wheelchair accessibility are expensive and custom-made, with the average cost in 2023 being $60,000 new. While insurance will contribute to some of the cost, a replacement vehicle will require additional funds.
