Please watch the above 2-minute video.
Herbert A Littleton was born in Mena, Arkansas. When HAL was young, his family relocated to Spearfish, South Dakota, where he attended Sturgis High School. Herbert, (or HAL), enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. While serving with the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, Hal saved his fellow Marines by falling on a grenade which had landed in the area where they were observing enemy movements in order to call in artillery support. HAL absorbed the full blast of the grenade, saving his fellow Marines. For this heroic action, HAL was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
A Medal of Honor Memorial was erected at the Arkansas state capital in 2000. Time has taken a toll on the plaques which honor HAL and 23 other Medal of Honor recipients and they need to be replaced.
The Herbert A Littleton Detachment of the Marine Corps League is raising the funds necessary to replace HAL's plaque. Any additional funds collected will go to the Arkansas Medal of Honor Commission to help replace other plaques.
