Replace retired Police K-9 Ike
Donation protected
Modesto Police K-9 Ike worked the streets of Modesto for over two years with Officer Mike Pershall. On August 8th, 2017, Officer Pershall was promoted to the rank of Police Sergeant. K-9 Ike continued to live with Sergeant Pershall and his family during the process of selecting a new Officer to handle K-9 Ike.
Tragically, on August 22nd, 2017, Sgt. Mike Pershall was killed by a drunk driver while off duty. With the senseless death of Sgt. Pershall, the Modesto Police Department and the Modesto Police Canine Association (MPCA) felt it was necessary for K-9 Ike to remain with Sgt. Pershall’s family. K-9 Ike was retired by the City and sold to the Pershall family for one dollar.
The MPCA is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that raises money to benefit current and retired Modesto Police K-9's. MPCA is partnering with the community in an effort to raise enough money to be able to buy a new Police K-9. This new Police K-9 would replace K-9 Ike and get the Police Department back up to the allocated number of six K-9s. By getting back up to six K-9s, the Police Department would again be able to provide 24/7 K-9 protection to the citizens of Modesto.
With this unplanned retirement of K-9 Ike, the City had not planned on replacing a K-9, nor had they budgeted for the replacement of a K-9. Given the circumstances, the MPCA fully supported the decision to retire K-9 Ike. The MPCA would like to work with our community partners to help the Modesto Police K-9 unit get back up to full strength. The MPCA purchased K-9 Hank in the summer of 2017. K-9 Hank cost approximately $11,500.
If enough funds are raised, MPCA will purchase a K-9 and then donate that K-9 to the Modesto Police Department. Any donation made to the MPCA is tax deductible. A receipt can be provided for donations if so desired.
