Replacing Our Stolen and Totaled Handicap Van
Donation protected
In 1993 my mother Jodi Mason was the victim of a car accident which left her a quadriplegic, completely changing the dynamic of our family. At that point my Nana took on the challenge of becoming the full time caretaker for my mother, my sister, and I. Regarless of the injuries our mom endured she became our rock, never giving up mentally or losing her strength. Over the years as my sister and I have taken on greater responsibilities with her care we've made sure that she could attend all activities possible given limitations of public transportation.
At the end of last year we were blessed with the opportunity to experience freedom of mobility in the form of our own handicap van. Not only did this make trips such as church or the grocery store much more feasible, visits to places that were previously out of reach became accessible. It eased our minds knowing she would no longer be stranded waiting or arriving at her destinations at unpredictable times. For the first time in 26 years she had a reliable vehicle tailored to her needs that restored a sense of independence, making travel hassle free. She could finally get more involved in the community and be present for so many more of our family events.
Mom and Nana were able to focus more time on bonding outside of the caregiver relationship during this period. However, after only a few months of getting to enjoy the benefits of what having the van did for us a family, Nana fell ill with pneumonia. Despite the progress she was making and an approaching discharge from the hospital, she went into cardiac arrest and passed away on June 7th. As if losing her, the glue that held our family together for so long, hasn't been difficult enough we have also been in the process of getting the family moved this month because we could no longer afford the home we were in.
This past Sunday the 23rd my mother, sister, and neice spent the first night at their new home. We were all relieved to have the move go smoothly and for the struggles of this month to begin to subside.
During the course of their first night there the van was broken into, stolen, and crashed into a nearby home. It was totaled and the driver had fled the scene before authorities arrived. Due to financial limitations with the move and Nana passing, they were unable to afford full coverage on the van making it a total loss.
Nanas funeral services were scheduled for July 4th weekend and now that this has happened it is no longer possible. We are all at a loss for words and in shock from everything that has happened in the last 30 days. We are in desperate need of help.
The proceeds of this gofundme would go towards a new van with a year of full coverage insurance, and would help us begin to restore our lives. It would help us to recover from the tragedies we are facing.
We would like to say thank you in advance for every bit of help. There is no way to express the amount of gratitude we have for anyone who is able to reach out to us at this time. Any ounce of support means the world to us.
Sincerely,
Our family
