Hi, my name is Helen Blessing, and I’m raising funds for Rafeiros e Companhia, a small, underfunded, but determined animal rescue in northern Portugal. This incredible organization, led by Sonia Veloso and Luisa Veloso, fights tirelessly for abandoned, abused, and neglected animals in their community.

The Heartbreaking Story of a Mom and Her Puppies

Yesterday, Sonia and her team responded to a horrifying situation. Seven tiny puppies were found cruelly locked inside an old, damaged freezer, with no food or water, lying in their own waste. Their mother was chained outside, without shelter, food, or water, barking incessantly and crying out for her babies.

Thanks to Rafeiros e Companhia’s courage and compassion, the puppies were rescued immediately. However, they could not leave the mother dog behind, so they negotiated with the owner to surrender her as well. The whole family was rescued but their journey to recovery is far from over.

How You Can Help

Rafeiros e Companhia operates entirely on donations and volunteer efforts. This underfunded rescue cares for over 150 dogs in a facility built for just 40, with almost no government funding or veterinary support. The immediate costs to care for this brave mom and her puppies—including food, medical care, and sterilization—are overwhelming.
