The London Search and Rescue Team (LSAR) is an all-volunteer organization which provides search and rescue services to all communities within 150km of London On, over 500, 000 people. This service is in jeopardy. Our members assist police forces in the search for missing individuals when time is of the essence. These missing individuals include persons with Alzheimer’s and dementia, despondent individuals, children, people in crisis and persons with mental challenges to name just a few. We comprise 70 dedicated and professional volunteers who answer the call for assistance no matter the time or the weather conditions. After 18 years serving the community we do not want to dissolve.
Unfortunately, on September 22, 2020 London Search and Rescue was advised by their affiliated organization that they would be severing their relationship with LSAR effective October 6, 2020. As of this date, it means that LSAR has no funding at all which is a dire situation. This came closely on the heels of us having been the victims of a large theft that resulted in the loss of our operational equipment. With little time to rebuild from the ground up and no access to any funding, we have been working very hard to make sure there is no gap in service to our community at a significant cost to our own members.
We need help from the community with funding. Search and Rescue is a costly undertaking. We do not charge the community for our service and the province of Ontario does not provide funding for Search and Rescue. To cover the cost of operating, our members absorb all of their personal costs, meals, training, travel to and from a search, and all of their personal equipment they need. Our volunteers pay for the privilege of belonging to the team but membership dues can only cover so much, and we certainly can’t charge a missing person or a police force for our services. We need your help covering costs such as:
· Insurance for our equipment, our Trailer, our Truck so we can set up a command post.
· First Aid certifications
· Facility rental for meetings and training
· Replacing equipment
· Office Expenses
· Uniforms for searchers, close to $300 for one searcher to receive a uniform.
We cannot rely on members, and must ask if you can help out your local Search and Rescue team, we would appreciate it greatly. Anything you are able to give will help ensure the sustainability of the London Search and Rescue team .
