Research & conservation of ecosystems in Honduras

Donation protected
Hi I'm Cameron and I'm raising money for a 6 week conservation and research trip to Honduras in summer 2024 with Operation Wallacea. I will be travelling to one of the most biodiverse and important ecosystems in the world in the Cusuco cloud forest and Mesoamerican coral reef.

I will spend 3 weeks in Cusuco national park collecting data on forest structure, carbon surveys, bats, butterflies, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals, such as the critically endangered and endemic Cusuco spike-thumb frog, and resplendent quetzal, pictured above and below. Ineffectual enforcement of protection laws mean this rare bosque enano forest is being rapidly deforested, destroying valuable the only habitats for the 24 species found nowhere else.

I will then spend 3 weeks at either Tela Marine Research Centre or on Utila Island surveying part of the second largest barrier reef in the world. Here we will be diving to 3D map reefs, survey many species of turtles, fish, seagrass, mangroves, marine plastics and many other projects. This area also attracts one of the worlds largest congregations of whale sharks, but is currently threatened by bleaching and overfishing.

Opwall runs research expeditions across the world, and data from these expeditions will be used for scientific publications, ecosystem monitoring, and implementing local conservation strategies.

I need to raise about £6000 in total to cover flights, internal travel, personal equipment, Visas, and the expedition fees of £4000. To raise the money I am working full time in the holidays and part time at uni. I will also run a marathon, do some sponsored hiking, and a boxing fight. Finally, I will fundraise at my old schools, contact relevant companies for equipment and advertising, and apply for grants from charities. Any money donated or if you can share this page at all would be greatly appreciated! :)
