Research in Light Pollution Mapping Advancements
Donation protected
Hello! We are a team of high school students looking to conduct research on advancements in light pollution mapping.
What is light pollution? As the International Dark-Sky Association states, "The inappropriate or excessive use of artificial light – known as light pollution – can have serious environmental consequences for humans, wildlife, and our climate." Light pollution has severe ecological consequences, increases energy consumption, and harms human health. Light pollution also contaminates the once-dark sky we had just less than 100 years ago. The wonder and beauty of the stars that have guided and inspired us for millennia are being stolen by light pollution.
To find solutions to combat the ever-growing spread of light pollution, we first must implement an efficient system that can collect data on the brightness of the night sky periodically. Currently, the available solution to survey the quality of the night sky is heavily time-consuming, requiring a person with a handheld device to travel to their desired locations and collect data manually. This can be extremely tedious, especially if a large area is to be surveyed.
This is where our project steps in. With your help, we are looking to construct a sky quality measuring system that will collect data in a cost and time-efficient manner.
All proceeds will directly go towards our research project. Any donations would be greatly appreciated!
