Though the campaign is soon to close, I've included some additional details and updated information that has come out since the creation of this campaign.
-Brittney

Hi, I'm Brittney. I managed The May Apartments in Downtown Portland from 2018 to November 2022. During those years, I not only oversaw the building but also called it home while raising my young daughter.

The May Apartments was a piece of Portland's history, providing a home to 42 families at a time since 1913. By living and working there for years, my 'tenants' became my friends. When our neighborhood started deteriorating through COVID and the riots, I was comforted by knowing I had a building full of allies that with a moment's notice would protect my family, the building, and each other. They supported my daughter and me in countless ways they likely don't realize, and now it's our turn to support them.

On May 16th, 2023, a devastating 4-alarm fire engulfed the 110 year-old building. The fire spread incredibly fast and was accompanied by multiple explosions. More than 120 firefighters bravely fought the flames and rescued residents. This horrific event instantly rendered around 35 people homeless. Many escaped with only the clothes on their backs, leaving behind their wallets, phones, and tragically in some cases even their beloved pets. Miraculously, no human lives were lost, although at least two firefighters sustained injuries.

Just over a week later, it was determined that the fire had been intentionally started and accelerated. A tenant, who was in the process of eviction, has since been arrested.

While processing the traumatic events, the affected residents are faced with a daunting task: starting completely from scratch. Due to the building being red-tagged, no one can enter under any circumstances. This means that even fire/water-proof items like safes or cherished family heirlooms are not recoverable.

Donations of any size will make a difference and are greatly appreciated. All funds generated from this campaign will be deposited into an OnPoint checking account created specifically for distributing the GoFundMe donations. When the campaign concludes at 8pm on June 9th, 2023, the total amount raised will be divided equally among the 36 affected residents and provided to them via Zelle or check, based on their preference.

We deeply appreciate your contribution and support during this challenging time. Together, we can help these resilient individuals rebuild their lives and move forward.

Thank you for your contributions and for sharing this campaign ❤️
