Restoration of Historic Germania, WI Schoolhouse

In 2022 the Germania Historical Society, Inc.(GHSI) acquired the historic Germania schoolhouse, which was built by the Germania religious “Colony.” It became one of the first graded schools in Marquette County. The GHSI is working to restore the building and grounds as a display and meeting venue for the Society, including restoring playground equipment, repairing outhouses, accessing the school bell, and bringing the building up to code in general.

GHSI preserves and promotes awareness of the history of the Germania area, including its beginnings as a religious commune awaiting the Second Coming, continuing through its heyday as a thriving regional center of agriculture, finance, and entrepreneurship, and its heritage as the longest-thriving commune in Wisconsin history.

Of the many projects that have to be completed in order to bring the building up to code, we are starting with bringing power to the building, repairing the foundation, building a Mechanical/Electrical room, and getting the necessary permits for such.
