To my dismay, it had been neglected for many years and most of the tombstones were completely covered by brush, weeds, and trees. That began my vision (along with other family members) of restoring the Hurst Family Cemetery in Chillicothe, Ohio.
Records indicate that Thomas A. Hurst was probably the first to be buried there in 1809. We have now located 25-30 tombstones, including: Levi and Sophia (Badley)Hurst, Sr., Hooper and Elizabeth (James) Hurst, John Nelson and Sally (Paine) Hurst and William Badley.
After years of neglect, several local descendants and friends are trying to restore the cemetery. To date, we've had a survey done of the cemetery boundaries and put in 150 hours of manual labor on the cemetery premises by making a path to the cemetery, clearing out brush, and removing 100+ honeysuckle stumps.
We are raising money to make a road into the cemetery (the legal easement) which is not there at the present time. We'd also like to clean off and stabilize the tombstones, enclose the cemetery with a fence, and upkeep the cemetery for future generations. If you'd like to help with this huge endeavor, please consider giving towards this project.
We also have more pictures that we've taken since we began in May 2020 if you'd like to be a part of this process and see what we've done so far.
