Restoration to Lichgate on High rd
Donation protected
We were heartbroken over last month destructive vandalism of historic Lichgate Cottage. This fundraiser will make possible the restoration of the shockingly vandalized Tutor-style Lichgate Cottage exterior and interior, along with its furniture, and outbuildings that were vandalized or have sustained damage over time. Donations will also provide for adding security including cameras, lighting, and fencing as well provide essential care for the beloved 175 to 300 year old Lichgate Oak Tree. Read more about the project below.
Donations would be made to the Laura Jepson Institute, a 501(c)(3) non-profit. The Institute, supports and provides this special place in Tallahassee, Leon County - a tranquil English tutor-style cottage and surrounding premises that was once home to the remarkable FSU Professor, Dr. Laura Jepsen. Consistent with her vision and legacy, Lichgate on High Road provides a peaceful and tranquil space for community education, meetings, and special events like weddings.
The goal of the fundraising project is $50,000
The grounds of Lichgate include the Tutor-style cottage, a stunning ancient live oak tree, an outdoor classroom, labyrinth, and a beautiful Shakespeare garden, that offer a serene escape that nurtures ecological awareness and a thoughtful approach to life. This site is not only a local treasure but is also recognized on the state and national historic registries, including the National Registry of Historic Places.
The cottage itself has a rich history; its floorboards were originally sourced from England and crafted into a ship that traveled between the colonies before being transformed into a home in Vermont in the early 1700s. When the house was dismantled, Laura Jepsen obtained enough wood for her floorboards. Her incredible generosity extended far beyond preserving this magnificent oak tree and cottage. She devoted the proceeds from a lawsuit for equal pay to fund the establishment of Tallahassee’s low-cost spay and neuter clinic, Animal Aid, and was a founding member of the Leon County Humane Society.
This “Go Fund Me” request is essential. With the heartbreaking destruction of the cottage and its historic contents, the need for restoration of the cottage and security of the premises become blatantly clear. Donations will directly contribute to the restoration of the grounds, the repair of cherished furniture, and the cottage structure's exterior and interior along with the outbuildings that have sustained damage over time. Donations will also provide for security, including cameras, lighting, and fencing, as well as essential care for the Lichgate Oak.
Together, we can heal and revitalize Lichgate, maintaining its role as a serene haven for all. With YOUR support we will restore and protect this beloved space that brings peace and joy to so many.
