Restore a Painting by a Forgotten Female Artist

Let us remember and commemorate the artist Beatrice Offor RA (1864-1920) by helping to restore one of her paintings in the collections of Bruce Castle Museum in Tottenham.

Beatrice was one of the first women at The Slade School of Art and became, against the odds, one of the most popular artists of her day. One hundred years on, following her untimely death, her work has largely been forgotten – like so many women artists of her time. But with the growing revival of admiration for Beatrice’s art and the renewed interest in her life and the portraits she painted, now is the time to acknowledge her achievements and make her work more widely known through exhibitions and digital platforms.

Bruce Castle Museum, with the support of the Friends of Bruce Castle, has chosen the portrait ‘Aglaie’ to be restored to its original glory for us to enjoy again – just as others would have seen it at the time. Aglaie was popular in Greek mythology as the goddess of beauty, splendour and magnificence, although the image above shows only part of the painting – the full portrait can be see on the Art UK website here.
