Restore Hope for Dad After Catastrophic Flood

Donation protected

We had a catastrophic flood in my dad's apartment due to excessive rainfall at our Setauket home. All it took was 20 minutes for water to break the window and rush in to 10ft high, submerging everything from his cancer meds to the items he had yet to go through of his late wife to his basic toiletries, clothing, leisure items. Sentimental and necessary items all waterlogged and no more place to call his own.
Had his son in law not broken down the door that had expanded from the water and got jammed (& the egress window was out of commission having been shattered with the influx of constant rushing water) this GoFundMe would be for a different tragedy.
It didn't help that after the midnight storm, he got water cleanup services just to encounter another storm that flooded the apartment once again. He cannot live in the apartment as it needs to be gutted to start the building process all over from scratch.

Please help my dad rebuild his life. He is devastated. We were trapped as the water level rose so it could've been lives lost instead of things. I am forever grateful to have him and he's grateful to get to see another day (even if it's raining).

He will need to repurchase everything aside from clothes which are drenched but can be washed. His entire apartment was accessible due to his condition. Looking to get him independently content as soon as finances allow.
Thank you all for your kindness and looking out for him so far.

He battles pancreatic cancer, is a recent widower, and an airforce vet. <3 and the best grandpa ever.

UPDATE: After News12 contacted, Jibaritos with Troops reached out, a non-profit that assists in relief efforts. They put us in contact with Rolling Thunder and General Needs, a veterans organization that helps get vets back on their feet.

Dad is an Air Force vet and an RN.

Dad is very grateful for the outpouring of support. Of course the rebuild will cost far more than the GoFundMe goal, at least that money will be used for getting Dad back on his feet at home. All he has are clothes that we have been feverishly washing since Monday--and we are almost finished. Just got Dad a new bed, some accessibility needs for the bathroom, and trying to give him some comfort as we clear space in our office to house him in a temporary bedroom.

It's been hard for dad as each destroyed item has sentimental value either from my childhood, my daughter's or his 34 year marriage with my mother. It's been a rough few days but he even said that he feels more hopeful day by day when he sees how kind the community has been. He thanks each and every one of you.

Funds will be used for the rebuild and water mitigation efforts to avoid anything like this ever happening again.
