Restore Kula Sandalwoods Inn & Café
Donation protected
August 8th, 2023 marked the deadliest wildfire in U.S. history. The wildfires ripping through the island of Maui have caused unimaginable damage to the island homes, lives of locals and visitors, and cultural sites. On the slopes of Haleakalā stands what remains of the Kula Sandalwoods Cafe and Inn, a quaint family-run bed and breakfast.
In 1989, Herbert and Alberta Loui moved from O’ahu to Maui and invested their life savings into their dream of running a restaurant and inn. It was their livelihood then, and continues to be the livelihood of their children today, Eleanor Worth (Kamehameha Schools '78) and her husband Jamie Worth, and Monica Loui (Kamehameha Schools '77).
On August 8th, three-story-tall flames from the Kula Gulch wildfire severely damaged the property that our Maui family relatives call home. One building burned entirely to the ground while the cafe and guest cottages were left standing but inoperable. Thankfully, the family survived and evacuated in time with just a few belongings. As Eleanor told us yesterday: "It was truly one of the worst days of our lives."
They are currently working 24/7 with the help of family members and community volunteers to douse hotspots with water buckets and clear debris caused by the fire. The Kula Sandalwoods has been a staple in the Kula Community since its inception, serving their community, guests to Maui from all over the world, and providing sanctuary to those in need when Tsunami warnings are in effect.
Their family and friends have sprung into action to help Eleanor, Jamie, and Monica. We've set up this Gofundme page to try to help. Any donation is very much appreciated and will go towards replacing infrastructure such as building structural materials, gas tanks, gas lines, water lines, electrical transformers, and other damage to the property.
Your love and support is greatly appreciated.
