Restore Stability for Chris After Devastation

Donation protected

Hi,
My name is Chris. I'm a physically disabled MSW student living in Seattle. For the past two years, I have been living in a homeless transitional housing program designed to give me housing stability.

On August 29, 2022, I put my entire life in a storage unit at Public Storage and took my clothes, craft supplies, computer, and self care items to the transitional housing program.

I paid public storage upwards of $5000 to keep my studio apartment worth of furniture, kitchen supplies, two bookshelves worth of books, home office supplies, art work, my entire life's worth of childhood photos/momentos/memories, my great grandmother's baking tin, and all the other things one accumulates over time, safe and ready for me to pick up when I left the transitional housing program (max stay of August 31 2024)

What public storage didn't tell me, or anyone else, is that they have a major rat infestation.

My friend and I went to the unit so she could begin unloading it for me on August 29. I see a sentimental item chewed up and rat droppings on my furniture. I reported to public storage and their insurance claim said $250 for vermin.

Friend, and later my boss, graciously began the daunting task of unloading my life and moving it into a brand new apartment.

I can't move because of my disability. So I stayed behind to unpack. I began opening boxes. They were all sealed and taped shut. They looked fine.

Then I began to see... Rat droppings, discoloration, stains, books that look like they have water damage on them but it's clearly not water, papers chewed up, a dark goo, and so much more. I gave up opening boxes and taking photos because it was clearly all destroyed.

Worst of all, this includes my childhood memories and my great grandmother's baking tin.

I have lost everything. I have no idea how much it's going to cost to rebuild my life. So I put a guesstimate.

I reached out to local news when I saw public storage at that location had 8+ reviews over the last couple of years warning of this. All they did was raise my rent repeatedly and ruin my life.

This was meant to be my chance at stability. I've already used all my money for rent just covering basics.

I plan to report them to the attorney general and the BBB. And I'm hoping I can get my money back. But until then I need help.
