Restoring the Habitat

Hundred Acre Hollows, Inc is a 501c3 organization with a Platinum level on GuideStar, creating an educational experience oriented toward conservation where people can learn about the fragility of our unique Florida environment.
Our mission is to protect the wildlife, restore the habitat, and engage the public. We protect the threatened Gopher Tortoise, a keystone species on which more than 350 other animals depend to survive. We identify and remove invasive vegetation; we plant or protect native species (like the Sky Blue Lupine, the host plant for the endangered Frosted Elfin butterfly). We engage with the public so that people can discover the beauty of this hidden treasure, enjoy walking on the nature trails, learn about sustainibility, and know how to protect the ecosystem to make it more resilient.
After 5 years of removing invasive Brazilian Pepper trees by hand to create space for native plants to grow back, we hired a contractor to grind and uproot Pepper trees all around the 114 acre preserve. We have completed one-third of the job, increasing the open spaces for Gopher Tortoises to burrow (our January 2022 burrow survey located 467 active burrows).
Our funds set aside for this big project are depleted. We need more funding to continue to restore the habitat in this more efficient manner.
Thank you so much for your help protecting the environment. By saving Hundred Acre Hollows from habitat destruction, you are also helping the Indian River Lagoon by not adding more stress to the ecosystem. Visit our website for more information on our projects.
Sincerely,
Thomas Unrath, President, and Board members of Hundred Acre Hollows, Inc.
