Resurrection of Dee's cabin
Donation protected
My name is Erin and I am one of the first people to live with Sister Dee at Noah's Ark.
Sr. Dolores Christi Gartanutti had a long career in teaching, lastly at Dominican Commercial High School in Jamaica Queens. She left that job to open a foster home for adolescent girls in Richmond Hill, Queens.
When Dee retired in 1997 from being a foster parent to nearly 2,000 adolescents over a 20 year period she moved to Parksville,NY and lived in a cabin her brother and friends helped build. She continued to help people working with adults in a detox center and then volunteered helping children in the court system.
On Monday 8/31/20 she left the house to bring communion to her 90+ year old friend. One hour later her house exploded and has burned to the ground. As you can see nothing is salvageable. Her dog Danny Boy passed away in the explosion.
We are all beyond grateful that she is alive.
The cabin was not fully insured. Dee was told she may get $40,000 from the insurance company. It will cost approximately $4,000 just to clear the land.
Dee is staying with a friend in the area until, hopefully, her home can be rebuilt.
We are raising funds to rebuild a solid, handicap accessible structure for Dee in the spot where her cabin was. We are also raising funds to completely furnish the home once it's built.
We are grateful for any help towards this goal. If we get even half of the support Dee has given to countless people over her lifespan we will have more than we need.
Thank you
Erin
Update requested as per GFM guidelines:
All funds are going directly into a bank account dedicated for Sr. Dee where checks can be written directly to contractors/vendors.
Funds will go towards covering all construction costs involved with clearing the land, ensuring utilities can be accessed due to fire damage, assess land integrity before placing concrete slab, assessing which type of living structure is best suited for that location, all costs associated with building/installing a home as well as all furnishings (appliances, furniture, household items, etc.).
