Retool My School

Tax deductible
Greetings Family and Friends,

I am in my fourth year as Vice-Principal of Miami Union Adventist Academy (MUAA). The truth is, I’ve never felt a calling to administration; never desired to be one of the individuals responsible for the operation of a school. What tipped the scale for me was feeling stuck in my previous position; the feeling of being a warm body responsible for pushing students along. Three years ago, I visited MUAA on a whim. It was the summer months and the school had undertaken a remodeling project. My first vision of MUAA was with dust all over the place and walls literally laying on the ground. It was with that image in my head that I knew this school was in the process of change. When encouraged to apply for the open V.P. position, I did so because I desired to be an agent of change.

In the three years I have been at MUAA, I’ve been able to implement positive changes to our Discipline Matrix, Student Handbook and Curriculum. Meanwhile, our school has completely remodeled its high school department to ensure each classroom is fit for a modern learning environment and our elementary classes have been enlarged to accommodate a differentiated learning environment. As we look to the next year, we plan to remodel our annex to open an Early Learning Center (ages 2-4), update our Library Information Resource Center, and remodel our middle school department. We have been able to accomplish much of this work through the generous support of our Conference/District and our constituent churches.

Today, as I look at my school, I see we’ve traveled far from where we were three years ago, but I also see we still have many miles to go. My duties as Vice-Principal revolve mainly around discipline and academics. It is my duty to ensure my teachers have what they need to teach and my students have what they need to learn. Our school provides most things in accordance to our budget; however, there are always some outlier items that budget does not account for. As I am able, I purchase items out of my own pocket; but other items require fundraising.

I write this letter to solicit your help. In hope of providing updated furniture, there is one area in my school that I am fundraising for this summer. Our computer lab was recently remodeled as a part of the high school department and 30 new computers were added (through Title 1 funding). I am seeking your assistance so as to provide appropriate chairs for the learning space. Currently, our students grab whatever chair they can find, often borrowing from other classrooms.

In the last few months, I have given towards furniture for our 4th and 5th grade classrooms. To assist with differentiated instruction, I purchased a white board kidney table for our 4th grade class. This will allow a space for small group instruction and the write-on table surface will help promote excitement and engagement among the students. Additionally, I purchased a set of chairs for our 5th grade classroom. The students had been sitting in folding chairs for two years because funding was not available to replace missing chairs (either damaged or moved to other classrooms). As I ask you for your financial assistance, please remember that I ask as a person who understands his fiduciary responsibilities and has himself given to the cause. MUAA is a great school. I solicit your support to make it a little better, primarily for our students and their continued success. Thank you in advance for your consideration and support.
