Rhonda's Mission: Reuniting Children and Parents

My name is Rhonda Bonner, and I would like to share a part of my story. I grew up with both of my parents incarcerated, but I was fortunate to have access to supportive programs during that time. Even after my mother was released, those programs continued to provide guidance throughout my upbringing. Although she was in jail, I never felt her absence, as she remained an important part of my life through the support offered. This experience highlights the necessity of initiatives like this one. Even though my mother is no longer with me, Thelma will always be my angel.

I am determined to launch this initiative to help children in Jefferson County and the surrounding areas who are missing their parents due to incarceration. As many young parents are being sent to prison, their children often end up in the care of family members or older grandparents. My goal is to purchase three used vans to transport these children, accompanied by an adult, to visit their parents at various prisons every weekend.

Some boys just need a hug and a conversation with their fathers; such moments can brighten their week. Similarly, girls might seek comfort from their mothers and guidance from their fathers on how they should be treated by boys. Children need that special love from both parents. Just because a parent is in prison doesn’t mean that love and support are any less important. It truly takes a village, and I want to restore that love for these kids.

I’m starting this GoFundMe campaign to raise $50,000, which will be dedicated to purchasing three used vans and covering maintenance, fuel, and insurance costs. We will establish a scheduling system to coordinate visitation days at various prisons, ensuring that children have the opportunity to see their parents on weekends. This initiative will be run by a dedicated team of volunteers who are passionate about providing these trips and ensuring that the children have a safe and supportive experience.

Every donation, no matter how small, will help us make this vision a reality and bring joy to children who need it most. Our aim is to fill the void of love and connection in their lives while also providing emotional support during their visits.
