November 2016
Stay woke!
That rallying cry took on added urgency in November, not only with the election of Donald J. Trump, but with the passing of Gwen Ifill, a truth-teller who, like fellow journalist George Curry, left us this year with daunting journalistic shoes to fill.
Reports tell us that some news organizations are seeing huge spikes in donations and subscriptions as readers look to support newsrooms that hold Trump accountable.
That's a good thing. But we also must hold newsrooms accountable, especially on issues of diversity and inclusion.
"Richard Prince's Journal-isms" has sought to fill that role since 1991. It calls out the media when warranted; it lets news consumers know of best practices; it encourages our journalists of color and others who care about accurate and fair coverage. It tries to make sense of our new political and media reality.
"Journal-isms" received a heartwarming outpouring of support this year when readers came forward with ideas, suggestions and assistance as it was steered unexpectedly toward an independent path. A strategy committee evaluated business models and continues to do so.
Now it needs financial support to continue its mission. The new business entity "Richard Prince's Journal-isms" will be accepting gifts or loans that will help us in the media "stay woke." A Go Fund Me page has been created at <https://www.gofundme.com/richard-princes-journalisms>.
[Update: the IRS has determined that the gifts are tax deductible effective Feb. 9, 2017!]
