Working it for Wellsy - Bring Richard home
Donation protected
Hi my name is David Wells. Richard Wells is my brother. Back in January 2023, during a seemingly ordinary Monday night after school pick up and work . Richard decided to go up on the roof and get a few things done to help the renovations along, something any of us would have probably thought nothing of - however it resulted in him having a catastrophic fall off the roof
He spent 50 days in icu ( the average time in icu is 3-5 days and has been in hospital ever since
However we are hopeful for Richard’s return home
Firstly , to all of the amazing villagers that have rallied around Kirsty and the 3 boys , we can’t thank you enough ….
While Richard and Kirsty were as prepared as a family as a family could be for an accident like this to occur, with their own personal insurances in place the extent of Richard’s injuries and on going care are far beyond what most could have been prepared for .
Richard’s insurances are allowing Kirsty and the boys to keep the mortgage paid and day to day expenses of the family met . This has been a massive financial pressure lifted off Kirsty and Richard to know they can keep a roof over the heads and try to get prepared for when Richard is allowed to come home
NDIS have come through the house and agreed it can be adapted for Richard’s return however there are modifications that will be needed and luckily NDIS will cover much of the of these which is fantastic
This GoFundMe page has been set up to try and help with additional modifications that are needed and that go well beyond what NDIS can / will cover
These modifications will be key to helping this family adapt to their new way of life
Kirsty and Richard need there oldest son Maverick who is 18 and his partner Bridie’s continued assistance with school pick up / drop offs for Diesel who is 10 and Steele who is 6 plus to help around the house
Steele has diabetes so he needs a little bit more care than a normal 6 year old
Currently Maverick is living in the room which NDIS have suggested would be ideal for Richard as it has access from the outside, can fit a modified bed and equipment required and it has a bathroom that NDIS will modify to meet Richard’s needs
We know some people are thinking why don’t they sell and buy a house that they don’t need to modify
Well it’s not that easy Kirsty has researched this option with her financial support team and it’s been decided that it’s not financially viable for them at this time
Not to mention that Diesel and Steele are very attached to this family home and the memories they created with Richard before the accident. And with Steele’s diabetes it’s important to keep around people that know what to do with his condition.
The wish list we have is long but if could help them along the way they would be very grateful
1
Clear the front yard of all trees and brickwork and level it so it’s a flat surface for Richard’s wheelchair to easily go in and out of the sliding door and create a small grass area for the boys to play soccer and can safely go out and watch them
2
Resurface and extend the back patio area so there is space for Richard and his wheelchair so he can sit out the back. NDIS will be installing a ramp over the sliding door track
3
Big one for them is to build a 4th bedroom off the side of the house so that Maverick is still home to help out
