Rich’s unforeseen surgical trauma
Donation protected
My brother Rich is a friend, husband, Dad, mechanic and youth mountain bike coach.
Unfortunately, he required surgery in June to remove a tumor in his head called an acoustic neuroma. The surgery didn't go as planned and he developed a bleed that required 4 units of blood. The bleed then caused a stroke.
Rich woke with facial paralysis, weakness on his right side, his speech was hard to understand, he had slowed and blurred/double vision in his right eye and was unable to swallow. While in the hospital he developed pneumonia and then a pulmonary embolism. He fought through it all. He was in the hospital for weeks, then was transferred to Shirley Ryan Ability Lab where he was in-patient for over a month. He worked extremely hard to be able to walk again, swallow and regain proper speech. During his stay he utilized every moment he had to maximize physical, occupational, and speech therapy, towards his recovery.
Rich has now been in outpatient therapy for 2 months, 3 days a week. He is getting better every day but the process is slow (even though he's come SO INCREDIBLY FAR!)
Rich and his wife, Katie have used all of their savings over the last 4 months. They have some amazing family and friends in their lives and are so grateful for everything that has been done for them during this time. They don't want to ask for financial help so I am going to ask for them. Rich’s doctors have said they expect him to make a full recovery. This situation isn't permanent and I am just hoping to help them bridge the gap until they hit the point where they qualify for long term disability. Rich is lucky to work for a great company that is holding his job for him and the hope is that he can return to work sooner rather than later.
Please help me help them make it through this period of their life by only having to focus on healing. They have recently received a large bill to keep their health insurance going, which Rich absolutely needs. Any amount helps. Thank you so much!
