Rick Dyer’s story; and life as you know it changes in seconds…
On a day that should have been the same as any other day Rick’s life has changed forever. On Saturday 10/26, around dinner time, Rick suffered a devastating accident that broke two vertebrae (causing a spinal cord injury), 3 ribs and other injuries. The spinal cord injury has currently left him with the inability to feel his legs. As you can imagine his wife Dawn, family, friends and many others are looking to support his journey in any way possible. This page has been set up to offer support for the undeniable challenges and needs that are to come, the biggest positive note to all this is that Rick is determined, determined to walk again!
This is not a person, not a family that typically would put their situation out there, certainly not to ask for help, but these extreme circumstances have brought many, many challenges none of us would ever expect. To have this happen to a loved one or to one so close to you, I sit here typing this story not knowing what the right thing is to say, what is the right thing to do… What I do know is that my friend, for all rights of the word, my brother, has had this brought upon him and his family, his “village” is here to stay and ride this through.
Rick is about to begin his next phase of healing and recovery thanks to the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. Any of us that know Rick, we expect nothing short of complete determination and hard work to defeat this challenge. Along with this phase of rehabilitation comes the need to adapt many aspects of life and function that will allow Rick and his family to provide from the simplest needs to the more drastic needs that will allow for many functions we take for granted every day. So many simple, seemingly uneventful situations that we may not currently look at as priceless will forever be changed. But be completely clear that if there is a way to overcome an obstacle, we will find it!
This journey is not completely clear on this day, the hope of this page is to help Rick and his family with the burden of completion for many of the requirements to complete his treatment and recovery (medical costs, specialized vehicle, home renovations, … ) Family, friends and community have stepped forward, offering any help possible but as you can imagine this is a sizable undertaking that will take specialized resources, substantial funding and growing effort to get through this. There are not enough words to express the gratitude and Thanks to all of you that have it in your heart to help support this man, this family. I am not afraid to voice or display my love for this man, for this family…
