Ride For Residential School Victims and Survivors
Donation protected
On September 30th 2020, I rode my bike for 24 hours to raise awareness of the intergenerational trauma caused by the residential school system.
Since then, more attention to these tragedies has been given than ever before, and important steps forward have been made. On September 30th, the entire country will pause and reflect on trauma caused by residential schools on what is now known as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. But there is much more to be done.

Over the past year I have seen the power of educating, shining light on important issues in order to heal, and I have seen the power of bringing people together (both virtually and in person) to create positive change. I like to ride my bike, and have found that it can be used as a tool to bring people together to encourage this positive change.
On September 30th, the national day of truth and reconciliation, I would be so happy if you joined me in some way, and invited others to join too.
How?
- Join the virtual bike ride in orange (make your own route wherever, whenever, post on this page, tag me on Instagram @maddypilon, send me an email [email redacted], and share to your networks!)
- Join in person for a 30km orange shirt ride along the Toronto waterfront trail starting at 10am (message me for more details)
- Organize your own orange shirt bike/walk/run/etc between September 30-October 3rd (share with me, challenge yourself, I will be posting a grand total distance from all participants at the end of the weekend)
- Donate to this campaign or to an organization that supports those affected by residential schools
- Spend time learning about the history of residential schools, intergenerational trauma, colonization, and more.
- Attend events, listen, learn, share, support.
I will be sharing links, photos from the event, videos, and more throughout the entire weekend on Instagram: @maddypilon
The funds raised from this campaign will go towards the Woodland Cultural Centre’s “Save the Evidence” Campaign. A campaign to keep the Mohawk Institute Residential School as a physical reminder of Canada’s dark past, and as a centre for support, education, and healing. A portion of funds will also be allocated to those affected intergenerationally by residential schools through Toronto Indigenous Harm Reduction, and the Underground gym.
These are three organizations that I personally choose to support, however there is no expectation to donate in order to participate in any part of this orange shirt day ride weekend. Take time to educate yourself on the history of residential schools first before taking time to donate. Please feel free to participate in any way you’d like, and donate to the organizations you choose to support. If you would like to donate to any of the above organizations directly, links are provided below:
