Ride The Rockies for Epilepsy

“You have epilepsy”, words no 60 year old one wants to hear. All of a sudden you have no driver license, no job, you are thrown into a situation you have little knowledge about, you are blacking-out everywhere and at anytime. I was having partial seizures 2 and 3 times a day. The prescribed drugs to control them as it turned out didn't get me under control. This part is not a scientific process. That was late 2012 and continued 2013. During this time I had a couple of job, however, as you can image this situation put the owners in a bad position. I quit one job and let go of a couple others. As a business you just can't have people passing out during work hours and understandably so. Employment Insurance was available for a short time but that run out, Now what?

July 2014 I spent 2 weeks in the seizure monitoring unit at Foothills Hospital, Calgary. Hookup to a computer with electrodes attached to my head 24/7 and able to walk about 15 meters. What an amazing groups of professional within the Epilepsy Program. To say thank-you to all Doctors and supporting staff of the Epilepsy Program I plan to Ride the Rockies and raise some funds for that department of Clinical Neuroscience.

My first celebratory ride:
In 2010, after surgery and recovery to remove a Epiretinal membrane on my left eye. I celebrated with a cycling trip North up 766/22 to Jasper and back South on Hi-way 93. Myself, panniers, tent and heart packed and went on the adventure. During the trip I met all kinds of great people, had some great food at local restaurants and bistros.

Hinton, Alberta. Looking at the mountains I would be in that day.

In 2013 I rode just under 1300km including to work and back home 20km each way. Last year was tougher and the distance dropped to around 500km. No a side note, since diagnosed, I've able to drive for only 3 months early last year. It's an adjustment to life, and thank everyone who has helped me along. I hope this ride gets you excited to take part and pass it on to someone you think would like to do that ride.

Thank-you
