Riding for Mackenzie
Donation protected
5 year old Mackenzie is one of a set of twins who was born at 27 weeks weighing 2lbs, in South Africa. As a result of being a micro-preemie she suffers from many health complications including Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy and Hydrocephalus, the latter for which she underwent brain surgery at 3 months old weighing only 5.9lbs, and another at 6 months old.
As a result of her cerebral palsy, Mackenzie now also suffers from a chronic dislocated hip making her very uncomfortable as you can imagine.
Her parents have, over the past couple of years, being trying to raise funds to get Mackenzie to the United States for her to undergo SPML surgery to correct her dislocated hip. The surgery alone will cost $17000 plus their travel costs from South Africa to the US.
In an attempt to raise funds for this cause I will be cycling a 65km mountain bike race, called the “Steaming Nostril”. But this is no ordinary MTB race. It’s in Canada. In April. Quite possibly still through the snow and ice. Yes it’ll be spring but let’s face it, this is Canada! This also means training through the worst of Canadian winter - something that I an African am not very used to!
I am setting somewhat of a lofty goal for the amount of funds raised so please open your heart to this little girl. Every single cent raised will go to getting her to the US.
For those wanting to donate in ZAR, I also have a backabuddy page for this cause
